The Latest Volleys in the Black Sabbath vs. Bill Ward Controversy
![]() |
| Geezer Butler |
On Saturday, Geezer Butler went on his website to present his side of the story in the Black Sabbath/Bill Ward contract negotiations.
HEAVY HEARTThat led to Ward posting a new rebuttal on his website to dispute some of Butler's claims:
I feel sad to see the Sabbath reunion becoming a bit of a soap opera on the internet. It has been a very tough year for us as a band, having announced our reunion plans, only for Tony to be diagnosed with lymphoma, leaving us no choice but to postpone the proposed Sabbath tour, and then for Bill to go public on his site about an un-signable contract. None of us knew how Tony was going to respond to his intensive chemo therapy, and radiotherapy. Ozzy and myself flew to England to be with Tony, and on his “good” days, we’d meet at his home studio and put ideas together for the upcoming album, all sitting down together, no drummer involved, just 3 of us quietly putting together ideas. We thought that when we had enough songs together for a full band rehearsal, we’d move back to L.A and put the whole thing together with Bill. Unfortunately, to our surprise, Bill issued a statement on his site saying he’d been offered an un-signable contract. He hadn’t told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us let alone in public. We had the idea of keeping just one show in this year, hoping that Tony would be well enough for that show, and that things with Bill would be sorted. As you may expect, a one off show at Donnington Festival (Download) costs an absolute fortune to stage, involving over 50 people, transport, air fares, hotels, meals, agents, promotors, accountants, lawyers etc, so none of us, expected to make much money from it- it was a one off Sabbath show for the fans, before we go into recording the new album. Apparently, this wasn’t acceptable to Bill’s representatives, they wanted an amount that was so unrealistic that it seemed to have been a joke. So we resigned ourselves to doing Download without Bill, hoping he’d change his mind and at least make a guest appearance. We started rehearsals a few weeks ago with Tommy Cluefetos, the drummer who will be on the Ozzy and Friends Tour. Brilliant drummer and good bloke. It was decided we’d better do a warm up show, to break the ice since we haven’t played together live. The O2 Academy was available in Birmingham, where we were rehearsing, so we decided on that, and to make a donation to Help For Heroes Charity, since we’d be ironing out any glitches we may have. Then Bill put out a further statement saying he’d been ready to play the Birmingham show , but he was expected to have to do it “for free”- well, I think that’s basically how you raise money from gigs for charity – you play them “for free”.
All I am saying is that there are two sides to everything. I do hope to play with Bill again some day. For whatever reason; it wasn’t meant to be this time. Bill’s made his decision, and I have to respect that. Hopefully this painful year will be worth the wait for the new Sabbath album and end in joy and happiness for all.
Stay frosty,
Geezer
Dear Sabbath Fans and Musicians,Awaiting the next statement.
I have read Geezer’s statement of May 19, 2012 titled “Heavy Heart.” Out of respect for the Birmingham gig, I wanted to wait 24 hours before releasing this statement. There are some points he brought up which I want to respond to.
1) I had indeed notified Ozzy, Tony and Geezer, well before my first public statement, that I was having contractual difficulties.
2) I came out into a public forum to be accountable to the fans primarily, and to say at a public level there’s a problem. The band members stopped talking and corresponding with me some time ago, with the exception of a nice letter from Tony on my birthday. Prior to that, Geezer and I were corresponding, but that stopped abruptly in late February after I emailed a specific question to him.
3) In my statement of May 15, I clearly stated I would play Birmingham for free. That was not a problem – charity or otherwise.
4) My Download fee was not an extravagant amount. Originally, when Download was part of a full tour, I had asked for a decent fee. More recently, as we were negotiating just Download/Birmingham and Lollapalooza, I told my attorney that I would accept the proposed small Download fee, but there were other parts of the offer that were unsatisfactory.
I will continue to be honest and respectful towards the band and our fans. I will also confront any untruths about me, and any fault finding missions aimed at me that come to my attention.
I hope the band and the fans had a good gig in Brum.
Stay safe/stay strong.
Bill Ward

Robin Gibb (1949-2012)
Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees has passed away from cancer at the age of 62. The Gibb family has released the following statement:
The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.Robin, his twin brother Maurice and older brother Barry Gibb formed the Bee Gees (Brothers Gibb) in Brisbane, Australia in 1958 just after the family migrated from Manchester, UK to Australia. Maurice and Robin were 9-years old at the time. Barry was 12.
Robin was officially the lead singer of the Bee Gees although brother Barry added the falsetto lead to the group’s disco hits of the 70s.
The Bee Gees first hit was Spicks and Specks in Australia in 1966. It was actually their 12th single. Their Australian label Festival Records was about to drop them when they scored that first hit. Spicks and Specks was voted the Best Single of 1967 by Go-Set magazine.
The Bee Gees went on to sell over 200 million records making them one of the biggest selling acts of all-time behind Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney.
In 1967, the Gibb’s father Hugh sent a demo to The Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Brian passed on the group but sent the demo to his friend Robert Stigwood who picked them up for a 5-year contract. Their first song with Stigwood, New York Mining Disaster 1941 became a Top 20 hit in the UK and USA. Their next single To Love Somebody was covered by Janis Joplin. Massachusetts became their first UK number 1.
Things went sour in 1970 when I.O.I.O. failed to chart. Maurice left the band and Barry recorded a solo album that was never released. By the end of the year, the brothers had made up and the Bee Gees were back together for more hits including How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, My World and Run To Me.
By 1973, the hits had run out and it once again looked like it was all over for the Bee Gees until they met soul music producer Arif Mardin. Mardin took them in a new direction … R&B. Their friend Eric Clapton suggested they move to Miami and there with Mardin they recorded the songs that gave them a new life Jive Talking and Nights On Broadway.
Their next album Children Of The World contained the first of their disco hits You Should Be Dancing. At the time Robert Stigwood had branched into film and was making Saturday Night Fever. He recruited the Bee Gees to put together the soundtrack after the film had been made. They wrote Night Fever, Staying Alive and How Deep Is Your Love for the movie. It gave them three US number one hits and the soundtrack became the biggest selling soundtrack of all-time.
Barry was writing more songs than the brothers could use. He gave Emotion to Aussie singer Samantha Sang, Islands In The Stream to Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers and Franki Valli recorded Grease for the movie of the same name. The Bee Gees were the hottest performers and songwriters on the planet.
The final Bee Gees album was This Is Where I Came In in 2001. It was their 22nd.
The Bee Gees officially ended in 2003 with the death of Maurice. Barry and Robin announced then that they would never perform as the Bee Gees again. However, they did plan a live reunion in 2009 but it never went ahead.
Robin Gibb was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 but was not presented with the award until 2004, delayed because of the death of his Maurice. Robin was also awarded the Honorary Degree of the Doctor of Music by the University of Manchester in 2004.
Robin’s health problems began in August, 2010 when he started to have stomach pains and was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery for a blocked intestine. It was the same condition that killed his brother Maurice in 2003. (His other brother Andy Gibb died in 1988 at the age of 30).
In November, 2011, Gibb revealed he had been battling colon and liver cancer. On March 4, 2012 Robin announced he was in remission from cancer but was again hospitalised on March 28. He slipped into a coma, yesterday, April 14.
Robin is survived by his mother Barbara, brother Barry, wife Dwina, daughter Melissa and sons Spencer and Robin-John.

The Black Sabbath/Bill Ward Situation Gets Stranger
When Bill Ward said he was done with Black Sabbath's reunion, he wasn't kidding.
In a move reminiscent of Michael Anthony's complete removal from the Van Halen website, there is now no sign of Ward on the Sabbath site. The difference is, this was all Ward's doing.
Representatives for the drummer contacted the group and requested that his pictures be removed from the site. Per the official statement:
At the request of Bill Ward, through his attorney, so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement in the current Black Sabbath lineup, we have temporarily removed Bill Ward’s images from the main pages of the official website. In accordance with Bill Ward’s attorney’s request, we are doing so for the duration of the forthcoming shows.Fans were quick to react, blaming Sabbath for the move but it is now clear that their comments were misplaced. Even though the pictures are gone, there remains a statement from Ozzy on the site saying "In my opinion, there's only ever been one Black Sabbath, and that's Iommi, Osbourne, Butler and Ward."

Just How Old is Loretta Lynn? History Says 77 But Paperwork Tells a Different Story
A reporter from the Associated Press was recently going through some old documentation on-line and found something a bit controversial, Loretta Lynn's birth certificate. The certificate says that Lynn was born on April 14, 1932, which would make the singer 80. That wouldn't be a problem except that most biographical information says that she is 77.
Loretta has never come straight out and said how old she was, but she said in her 1976 biography, Coal Miner's Daughter, that she was 13 when she married O.V. "Mooney" Lynn in 1948, a "fact" that has become a major part of her life story. Unfortunately, it appears that it isn't true as she would have been 15 (almost 16) on January 10, 1948 which is the date on her marriage certificate.
Further digging by the AP has turned up even more documents to support the new age. Her marriage license states the age of 15 (legal at the time in Kentucky) and two affidavits signed by her family that establishes the 1932 date.
So, it looks like one of the favorite pieces of trivia about Loretta Lynn may actually be a fable, but it doesn't diminish in one bit the importance and impact her career has had to the world of music.
