Story Portrait Style
by Gretchen Kirstel
On this page, is a portrait of two friends that is done within a luscious landscape painting. For this painting the artist used many techniques. First, the two girls dressed in period costumes, then they posed in an outdoor setting. Second, several pictures were taken of the setting and of the girls to be used in the studio. The artist then used her imagination to build a story-setting within the painting. Gretchen used a variety of techniques; vivacious, vivid colors; expertly drawn details; a sense of dreamlike qualities; perfectly pronounced perspective; intricately woven brushstrokes; well chosen facial hues, and lovely soft shadows to complete this masterpiece. "Timeless Friends" was painted in oil on canvas, in 2010, and is 36" X 24. This style of painting could be done with any group, be it friends, siblings, or family. The background used could be in a home, a backyard setting, or a place of your choosing.
